9 shots, 112 touches… Key Wrexham duo shone despite Harrogate comeback

Despite the disappointment of drawing after being 2-0 up, Wrexham stars Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon were once again on top of their games.

Last night, Wrexham travelled to face Harrogate and it appeared to be going to plan early on in the encounter.

After just 41 minutes, Phil Parkinson’s side were two goals to the good as Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee got on the scoresheet.

The home side were able to pull one back on the brink of halftime thanks to Dean Cornelius. Harrogate had levelled the game two minutes into the second half as Anthony O’Connor scored his second goal of the season.

Despite having more possession and over double the number of shots of the opposition, the game finished level. Wrexham could and probably should have done better with the chances they created.

With that being said, there were some positive performances to take away from the draw.

How did Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee perform?

Cannon opened the scoring on 36 minutes with his first-ever Wrexham goal which he has deserved in recent weeks. According to SofaScore, he had 88% pass accuracy, 6 shots taken and two interceptions it was an all-action performance.

Lee was on target once again as he scored his eleventh goal of the campaign. He completed the most dribbles on the pitch while taking 69 touches. He also had three shots and was potentially unfortunate not to have scored more.

Between the pair of them, they were full of output with a combined nine shots and 112 touches. Their two goals looked to be the difference on the day but it wasn’t to be in the end.

To score two and concede two in such quick time will be frustrating and to have not won is doubly annoying.

It must be said that a midfield trio of George Evans, Cannon and Lee gets the best out of all three. With them in place in the middle of the park, Wrexham have got as good of a chance of promotion as anybody.

What has Phil Parkinson said?

The result was clearly not what any of the Reds’ fans, players or coaching staff would have wanted. Once 2-0 up you have got to win the game it is as simple as that.

Discussing the result with the BBC, Parkinson revealed that he was frustrated with the result given the early form.

On that, he said: “We are bitterly disappointed. First half we did everything right. But, after the goal just after the break, we never got going.

“When you start losing second balls as we did, we lost the momentum. I just feel it’s two points dropped.”

It must be said that to lose from that position will be frustrating to everyone involved at Wrexham. With that being said they haven’t lost the game and still come away with a point.
