Crawley Town boss shares verdict on Wrexham style of play

Wrexham beat Crawley Town 4-1 at the STōK Cae Ras on Tuesday night, moving another step closer to League One.

Wrexham were back at home after two successive away trips at Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United.

One win and one defeat from those games left Wrexham needing a win back at home for the first time since beating Mansfield Town 2-0.

This proved to be a superb Wrexham performance with Ryan Barnett finding the opener before Paul Mullin made it 2-0 from close range.

Andy Cannon fired in number three after the break and Mullin latched onto a short back pass to slot home a fourth.

Crawley found a consolation through Klaidi Lolos but that wasn’t going to spoil Wrexham’s delight with promotion in sight.

Crawley Town boss on Wrexham

Crawley dominated possession but Wrexham showed a clinical edge in the final third.

Scott Lindsey has now offered his verdict on the game whilst speaking to Crawley’s official YouTube channel.

The Crawley boss suggested that Wrexham always sit behind the ball and look to initiate counter attacks.

Lindsey felt that Wrexham really showed that ability for Mullin’s first goal, suggesting that the Wrexham players were running really hard and fast to get into the final third.

Barnett found Cannon who set up Mullin to score, with Lindsey frustrated that his side couldn’t match Wrexham in that moment.

Lindsey added that Wrexham’s style of play is ‘very effective’ and that Phil Parkinson’s men are ‘good at what they do’.

“They play like that when you’re 0-0, they play with men behind the ball when you’re 0-0,” said Lindsey. “But what they do really well, and you saw it from them certainly with the second goal, was our long throw, we turned the ball over in the final third of the pitch and every single player for them run, they run really hard and fast and we didn’t match them for that in that moment, consequently they go and score a second goal two or three minutes after they’ve scored the first one.”

“It becomes hard then. Listen, they’ve got a way of playing which is very effective, obviously, because of where they are in the division. They’ve got some very good players, they’re very strong, athletic and they’re good at what they do,” he added.

Wrexham almost over the line

Crawley are far from the first side to have fallen at Wrexham’s hands this season.

Parkinson has built a battle-hardened, experienced side with many players who have played at higher levels.

That makes Wrexham difficult to deal with and this side are now so close to winning promotion.

Wrexham have just three games to play and promotion to League One is within sight.

Wrexham host Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon and a win in that one would bring the finishing line even closer.

Games against Crewe Alexandra and Stockport County to end the season could be tricky but Wrexham are in a great position to make it back-to-back promotions.
