Forget Michael Smith… Wrexham should rival EFL club for ‘really good’ Championship star

Wrexham want to sign a new striker this summer and should now join the race for a Championship star.

Phil Parkinson has signed seven new first-team players for the Red Dragons so far this summer.

However, Wrexham are still expected to make further additions before deadline day, with the striker department seemingly a priority for the club.

Paul Mullin was the Welsh outfit’s top scorer in 2023/24, netting an impressive 25 goals en route to promotion.

But Parkinson likes to play two strikers together and right now, he is lacking quality options in that area.

Jack Marriott scored a wonder goal as Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers last weekend but he has still found the net just twice in 19 games since he was signed in January 2024.

Ollie Palmer has also struggled for goals somewhat and the step-up to League One may prove too much of an ask for their previous record signing.

Wrexham should sign Middlesbrough star instead of Bailey Cadamarteri and Michael Smith

Parkinson’s desire to strengthen his centre-forward department has been made clear in the last week or so.

Bailey Cadamarteri has been linked with a move to Wrexham, while his Sheffield Wednesday teammate Michael Smith is of interest to Parkinson as well.

The Owls are well-stocked in the striker department and their recent capture of Ike Ugbo means Danny Rohl is now likely more willing to let Smith or Cadamarteri go.

However, though both players could improve Wrexham, they should focus their transfer efforts on another player.

Josh Coburn is attracting transfer interest from Millwall amid growing uncertainty over his future at Middlesbrough.

The 21-year-old spent 2023/24 as Michael Carrick’s second-choice striker but with Boro now expected to sign Tommy Conway from Bristol City, there is little room for Coburn on Teesside.

The centre-forward may still have a future at Middlesbrough, but Wrexham should now try and loan Coburn for the 2024/25 season.

What Josh Coburn would bring to Wrexham

Parkinson’s side are well known for whipping long balls into the box, either from their wing-backs or central midfielders.

This requires Wrexham’s strikers to be strong, good in the air, and able to control the ball well.

And if they were to sign Coburn from Middlesbrough, they would be getting a perfect player for that system.

The Englishman scored five in 21 Championship games last season. Not a staggering record by any means but he did have to deal with injury issues and very rarely completed 90 minutes due to the superb form of Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Carrick – who dubbed the forward ‘really good’ earlier this week as per Yahoo Sport – also doesn’t really set up his side to play to Coburn’s strengths, with Middlesbrough playing a lot of quick football on the floor.

However, if he moved to Wrexham, Coburn has the potential to be one of the top scorers in League One this season.
