Wrexham picked up a vital three points in their quest for Championship football as they beat fellow promotion chasers Huddersfield Town.

It was always going to be a tight, cagey affair and the first half did not disappoint with both sides struggling to break down the opposition defences.

Ollie Rathbone starred in the Wrexham player ratings and it was his delicious cross that was met by the head of Sam Smith for the ball to bobble off the goalkeeper and super sub Steven Fletcher slammed home the winner.

Huddersfield manager Michael Duff was furious with Wrexham’s goal after he claimed there was a foul in the build up and that Fletcher was offside. Phil Parkinson will be delighted with the three points and it gives his side some real momentum in the League One promotion push.

Phil Parkinson reveals key reason behind Wrexham win

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel post match, Parkinson gave his thoughts on the key reason behind Wrexham’s important win at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Parkinson stated: “The concentration levels of the lads I thought was superb tonight and the understanding of the individuals they were playing against.”

The Red Dragons boss then went on to praise the collective performance of the team and how it helped to secure the gritty 1-0 victory.

Parkinson explained: “The whole team worked so hard for each other and that absolutely key for us tonight and it had to be because away wins or any wins are never handed to you.”

Wrexham have won four consecutive away games in League One

Going into mid-January, Wrexham had won just three away games in League One this season before embarking on this four match winning streak on the road.

It is a complete turn around in form for the Red Dragons, with the Racecourse Ground now proving to be the problem having not won in four at home.

Parkinson had to change Wrexham’s away form and he has certainly shown his experience and worth over the last month in order to transform his side’s fortunes on the road.

Rotherham visit the Racecourse next and that provides another excellent opportunity for Wrexham to test themselves against a big name in the division and keep the pressure on Wycombe Wanderers.
