Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker was particularly pleased with the performance of one player in the victory over Morecambe.

Wrexham continued their surge towards the summit of the League Two table with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Morecambe this afternoon.

The hosts did take the lead through Gerard Garner inside four minutes but Phil Parkinson’s men hit back through James McClean, Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher to clinch all three points.

Mullin scored for the third game running while McClean’s midfield display was outstanding once more.

But surprisingly, that duo weren’t the players receiving plaudits from executive director Humphrey Kerr.

Instead, he praised the performance of midfielder Andy Cannon.

Humphrey Ker praises Andy Cannon for ‘man of the match’ display

Cannon has been brilliant for Wrexham throughout this campaign.

When Parkinson has suffered injuries to key players or dropped Elliot Lee for a game, Cannon has been a constant fixture in the Reds’ midfield.

The 27-year-old, who was only playing Championship football with Hull City last season, is one player who has gone under the radar in Wrexham’s promotion push.

While many have sung the praises of Mullin, Arthur Okonkwo and Lee, in particular, Cannon has gone about his business quietly, though his importance to the side becomes greater as the season goes on.

In today’s win over Morecambe, he put in his usual combative and energetic display, coming out on top in the engine room battle.

He won five of his seven attempted ground duels, made three tackles, two interceptions and completed 85% of his passes.

It’s the sort of performance that Wrexham supporters have become accustomed to seeing and it’s one that reaped huge praise from Humphrey Ker, hailing him for his ‘man of the match’ display.

He also called on the fans to create a song for him, as they have for several other players, and that is a testament to how influential he’s been.

Cannon is the glue in Wrexham’s midfield

McClean’s wand of a left foot has been used to devastating effect this season, particularly in recent weeks, while the darting runs of Lee from midfield are a trademark of Wrexham’s performances.

But every team needs a grafter in there, someone willing to pull their body on the line for the team and win possession back.

In the absence of George Evans, Parkinson has missed that type of player, but it has only reinforced the importance of Cannon, who put himself everywhere on the field today.

If Wrexham do go on to win promotion, the tough-tackling midfielder will deserve just as much plaudits as the likes of Mullin and McClean.
