League One boss shares clear verdict on ‘aggressive’ Wrexham, thinks Phil Parkinson has ‘top players’

Wrexham got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, hammering Northampton Town 4-1 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham had hit a minor sticky patch heading into Saturday’s clash with Northampton Town.

Defeat at Stevenage in midweek meant Wrexham had won just one of the previous four games and failed to score from open play in that run.

Wrexham returned to top form in style on Saturday though an eased some attacking concerns in the process.

This was a real hammering as James McClean opened the scoring only for Cameron McGeehan to pull the Cobblers level.

Wrexham dominated from there though with Jack Marriott and Elliot Lee making 3-1 before McClean added his second and Wrexham’s fourth.

Northampton Town boss on ‘aggressive’ Wrexham

The last few performances have been a little off-colour but this was much more like the Wrexham we have come to know under Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham got the ball into the box at every opportunity and Ryan Barnett was a major force in that regard.

All four Wrexham goals came from Barnett crosses as Northampton just couldn’t handle the wing back.

Northampton boss Jon Brady has now offered his verdict on Wrexham after Saturday’s defeat at the STōK Cae Ras.

Speaking on Northampton’s official website, Brady suggested that his side were ‘too soft’ to compete against an ‘aggressive’ Wrexham side.

Brady noted that Northampton’s defending simply wasn’t good enough, especially as he feels that Wrexham have ‘top players all over the pitch’.

Brady wanted to attack Wrexham but ultimately felt that his side were left too open and too exposed defensively.

“We were way too soft to play against today,” said Brady.

“We conceded too many crosses and our defending was nowhere near good enough. I’m not going to name names but we lost too many battles and we weren’t aggressive enough. Wrexham were aggressive and we were a bit passive at times in our defending.

“They are a really good outfit with top players all over the pitch but at 2-1 we are in the game. We had a good chance at 2-1 and we were creating chances but at the moment we are too easy to score against.

“I have to take responsibility for that and we have a bit of time before our next league game to work on things. We went at Wrexham and tried to win the game but that left us open,” he added.

Wrexham are a challenge for anybody in League One

Northampton are a settled League One side now but Wrexham were simply too much on the day.

Wrexham have been off-colour in the final third of late but this victory showed that established League One teams can be blown away when it clicks for Phil Parkinson and co.

Brady wanted to really take the game to Wrexham but the speed and quality down the flanks from Barnett meant they were dismantled.

Wrexham have put together an impressive squad for this level and that will likely lead to more wins than defeats over the course of the season.

There may be tricky games and difficult patches in the season but Wrexham are on the right path – and Saturday was a reminder of the quality at Parkinson’s disposal.
