Leyton Orient boss delivers verdict on Wrexham display in 0-0 draw

Wrexham came away from London with a point after drawing 0-0 at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson saw his side hit back after defeat to Birmingham City with a home win over Crawley Town last weekend.

That display wasn’t exactly vintage Wrexham and Saturday’s clash with Leyton Orient was similar in patches.

Orient went close on a couple of occasions before Wrexham kicked on in the second half.

Neither side could find a winner though, handing Wrexham a share of the spoils in a 0-0 draw.

A clean sheet was certainly welcome for Wrexham, having conceded four goals across games against Birmingham and Crawley.

Richie Wellens on Wrexham

Wrexham were a little fortunate to still be level at the break as a host of Orient chances went begging.

Orient boss Richie Wellens has now shared his verdict on the game whilst speaking to Orient’s official YouTube channel.

Wellens felt that his side should have been 3-0 up by half time despite not being at their best against Wrexham.

Wellens added that Orient were ‘outstanding’ in the first 20 minutes of the second half but Wrexham then took charge.

The former Blackpool midfielder feels that, if there was going to be a winner late on, then it would have been Wrexham as Orient played right into Parkinson’s hands.

Wellens feels that Orient have dropped two points with a 0-0 draw but thinks Wrexham will feel a sense of a missed opportunity late on.

“I thought, first half, we dominated the game and should be 3-0 up, without being really crisp and really good,” said Wellens.

“Then I thought, for 20 minutes of the second half, we were outstanding and then we’re forced into a few changes and I think the last 20 minutes, if there’s only one team that was going to win the game, it was probably them – just because we stopped passing the ball.

“We kept giving the ball away on the first pass so you can never get into shape, we kept playing long from the back when playing short had brought us a lot of success and we just made it into a scrappy game and I think a scrappy game suits them.

“It’s probably two points dropped but their argument would be that, in the last 20 minutes, they came on strong, but we should be out of sight by then,” he added.

Wrexham schedule about to get busier

October is almost here and Wrexham will now enter a very testing period.

Saturday’s trip to Orient was a tricky one and Wrexham must now head to face Stevenage in midweek.

That will be a real test for Wrexham and Parkinson will need to use his squad wisely in the coming weeks.

Wrexham welcome Northampton Town to the STōK Cae Ras next weekend with a busy October now on the horizon.

Wrexham have enjoyed a strong start to the season and Parkinson will be desperate for it to continue with games coming thick and fast after Saturday’s draw.
