Wrexham suffered another difficult away day as Phil Parkinson’s side slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Stockport County on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham are so strong at the STōK Cae Ras and beat Mansfield Town 1-0 last weekend.

Away days have been a little tricky for Wrexham though amid defeats at Birmingham City, Stevenage and even Harrogate Town on the road.

Saturday saw Wrexham travel to Edgeley Park for yet another meeting with Stockport County.

The two teams have become very, very familiar with each other over the years and this is one game Wrexham fans really wanted to win.

Sadly, Louie Barry scored the only goal of the game to hand Stockport a 1-0 victory and send Wrexham home empty-handed.

Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham ace

This was could only muster one shot on target in the 90 minutes whereas Stockport landed seven of their 19 shots on target.

Wrexham had Callum Burton to thank for keeping the score at 1-0.

Arthur Okonkwo has picked up an injury and that means summer signing Burton is stepping up in the Wrexham goal.

Burton was making his first league start of the season and made a handful of fine saves to keep Stockport at bay.

There was little Burton could do about Barry’s opener but he made a great save to deny Will Collar before pulling off a sharp double-save.

Burton continued to make saves in the second half, showing that he can be an able deputy with Okonkwo on the sidelines.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has now praised Burton, telling Wrexham’s YouTube channel that he felt the goalkeeper was simply ‘excellent’ against Stockport.

Parkinson added that the team performance is the most important thing, but feels that Burton couldn’t have done much more to help the Wrexham cause.

“Callum was excellent,” said Parkinson.

“He put in a really good performance. I’m very pleased for him, obviously, as much as he’ll be happy with his performance, the most important thing is the team gets a result and we weren’t able to do that, but I don’t think he could have done much more on the day,” he added.

Callum Burton provides just what Wrexham needed

Wrexham suffered a major blow with Okonkwo’s injury and were left to put Burton into the lineup for the first time in League One.

Wrexham pounced to sign Burton over the summer, securing him as competition for Okonkwo.

Previously a League One stopper with Plymouth Argyle, Burton won’t have been overboard by Saturday’s task.

Burton stepped up brilliantly against Stockport and proved that he can be relied upon to replace Okonkwo during his absence.

The last thing Wrexham needed was to see Burton struggle with Okonwko potentially out until the start of 2025.

Wrexham fans were impressed with Burton, Parkinson has shared his delight at his performance and Wrexham can feel safe and secure with Burton in goal moving forward.
