Wrexham’s pre-season preparations kicked off with a 5-1 thrashing of non-league side Hanley Town on Saturday afternoon.

Phil Parkinson’s men are gearing up for another American tour but were in action in rather less glamorous surroundings on Saturday.

Wrexham made the trip to take on Hanley Town, just about an hour away from the STōK Cae Ras.

Unsurprisingly, Wrexham dominated the game and finished up with a hefty 5-1 victory.

James McClean got the ball rolling for Wrexham before Jordan Davies added number two after the break.

Sam Dalby made it 3-0 before Hanley Town pulled one back, only for Davies to add another and Jake Bickerstaff rounded off the scoring.

Wrexham can head off to America off the back of a win and a great run-out, but it isn’t all good news for Parkinson and co…

Phil Parkinson on Elliot Lee injury

Playmaker Elliot Lee started the game, supporting Ollie Palmer and Jack Marriott in the final third.

However, Lee was substituted just 15 minutes into the game, limping off with teenager Harry Ashfield coming on.

That will have left Wrexham fans feeling a little concerned with the League One less than a month away.

Wrexham certainly can’t take any risks on Lee – especially during the first pre-season game.

Boss Parkinson commented on the situation after the final whistle, whilst speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

Parkinson noted that Lee’s issue was in the thigh, highlighting it as ‘the only negative’ from a comfortable Wrexham win.

Parkinson did though add that he doesn’t think Lee’s injury is ‘too serious’, hinting that he should still make the trip to America.

“Elliot’s thigh was a bit tight, the only negative,” said Parkinson. “I don’t think that’s too serious,” he added.

Wrexham have already seen Paul Mullin undergo surgery and subsequently miss the American tour this summer.

Fans would hate to see Lee go down too, but it sounds like he will be in action as Wrexham head over to the States in the coming days.

Wrexham may need to consider Lee competition

This Lee injury scare is something which may leave Parkinson considering his next transfer focus.

Yes, Wrexham still need defensive additions, but another attack-minded midfielder may be a smart addition.

Lee looked exhausted at times towards the end of last season and Parkinson didn’t really have a goalscoring threat from midfield quite like Lee.

Adding another option in that area would be wise, offering cover and competition for Lee.

That would allow Lee to have a rest when needed and would cushion the blow if there was to be any injury problems for him this coming season.

George Dobson has arrived to replace Luke Young but looking into landing another forward-thinking midfielder should now become a focus for Parkinson.
