An Andy Cannon masterclass saw Wrexham brush aside Grimsby Town 3-1 this afternoon, with Rob McElhenney offering his reaction.
Wrexham arrived into their trip with Grimsby winless in their last two matches having dropped valuable points against Harrogate Town and Tranmere Rovers.
With MK Dons bearing down on them in fourth, Phil Parkinson‘s men knew they had to bounce back and did so with a classy performance in Lincolnshire.
Three first-half goals at Blundell Park, including a wonderful Andy Cannon brace and a Paul Mullin volley, secured a vital three points that moved the Reds three points behind leaders Mansfield Town after they drew against Colchester United at lunchtime.
Wrexham host the Stags in six days and will go into that top-of-the-table clash with confidence after dispatching Grimsby.

Rob McElhenney reacts to Andy Cannon’s brace vs Grimsby
Cannon rarely scores for Wrexham in the league. You have to go back to November and a 2-2 draw against Harrogate Town for the last time he found the net, aside from scoring twice in the FA Cup.
The 28-year-old certainly had his shooting boots on today, netting the opener with a powerful drive before dispatching his second beautifully into the far corner.
During a promotion run-in, calls to produce moments of brilliance are heightened and Cannon, although an unlikely contender, was the one who stepped up for Wrexham today alongside Mullin.
The pair played an instrumental role in securing three points which pushed the Reds temporarily into second and left Rob McElhenney delighted.
After scoring his second goal, the Hollywood superstar replied with a fire and lion emoji:
Cannon was signed by McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in December 2022, with the former Hull City midfielder becoming a crucial cog in Parkinson’s midfield.
Andy Cannon is an unsung hero
After spending the majority of his career playing in League One, Cannon is one player who could make the seamless transition into the third tier.
The energetic midfielder has turned out 162 times at that level, so it was seen as a coup by Wrexham when they convinced him to drop down to the National League.
Cannon has since established himself as an important part of the fabric, and while he doesn’t earn the same credit as the likes of Mullin and Elliot Lee, hopefully, his brace today will make people realise what a player he is.
Many Wrexham supporters love Cannon as he always puts in 110% on the pitch and covers every blade of grass.
Today, however, he showed a different side to his game by scoring two well-taken goals, justifying his worth to the side from an attacking sense.
