Wrexham have confirmed their place in the EFL Trophy semi final after riding their luck to come away with a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

Arthur Okonkwo made several important saves throughout the game but was especially busy in the first half as Wrexham struggled to get a foothold in the tie.

Wrexham fans drooled over the performance of Lewis Brunt and the team’s defensive structure had to be spot on as Bolton put the home side under pressure.

There was one moment that lit up the game at the Racecourse Ground however, and it was produced by midfielder Andy Cannon, who scored a fantastic individual goal to send Wrexham through to face Peterborough United.

Wrexham fans in awe of ‘magic’ Andy Cannon moment

Cannon produced a rare moment of quality in the game for Wrexham when he turned two Bolton defenders and then produced a curling effort into the bottom corner to win the game.

Wrexham fans have taken to X to share their thoughts on the goal and the midfielder. One Wrexham fan wrote: “Always said Cannon should be given more game time he is better than James.”

Another Wrexham fan wrote: “Magic from Cannon, quality strike and we’re one game away from Wembley.”

One Red Dragon’s fan was impressed with the combination of Cannon and George Evans in midfield, they wrote: “Real positive from last two trophy games has been the partnership of Cannon and Evans in midfield both top drawer.”

Cannon believes Wrexham deserved to beat Bolton

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Cannon was complimentary of his side’s performance and believed they deserved their place in the semi final of the trophy.

Cannon stated: “We knew they were going to be a tough team to play against. I think we started off a little bit slow and then grew into the game and second half we were a lot better. I think we deserved the win in the end.”

Cannon has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Wrexham this season and will be hoping that his recent performances and goals will force his way back into Phil Parkinson’s plans for the League One promotion push.

The 28-year-old midfielder has certainly shown that he can bring an excellent work ethic and an eye for goal into Parkinson’s side should he be called upon for the rest of the campaign.
