Wrexham were minutes away from a place at Wembley before a late equaliser saw the EFL Trophy semi final head to a penalty shoot out.
Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee missed the decisive spot kicks in the shoot-out and scored a disappointing 4/10 in the Wrexham player ratings after their substitute cameos went horribly wrong.
Modou Faal’s fine chip and George Dobson’s thumping finish had given Wrexham a comfortable two goal lead at half time before Arthur Okonkwo conceded a needless penalty.
Peterborough took advantage of their sudden momentum in the game when the capitalised on some poor Wrexham defending from Eoghan O’Connell and Lewis Brunt to send the game to penalties in injury time.

Wrexham fans spot officiating error in penalty shoot-out defeat
Eagle-eyed Wrexham fans have spotted an error that the match officials should have picked up on during the shoot-out defeat to Peterborough.
It would appear that keeper Jed Steer moved off of his line during the shoot-out, including when he saved Mullin and Lee’s efforts.
Wrexham fans have taken to X to vent their fury, with one fan writing: “Is it just me that has seen Steer so far off his line.”
Another fan wrote: “Have they changed the rules again or something because I swear keepers weren’t allowed to jump five yards forward.”
One fan was furious with Wrexham’s defending in throwing away the lead but couldn’t hide the frustration at the lack of officiating, they wrote: “We deserve to lose that for our awful game management but come on how far does the keeper want to be off his line.”
Phil Parkinson furious with Wrexham’s defending
Speaking on Sky Sports post match coverage of Wrexham’s clash with Peterborough, manager Phil Parkinson slammed his side’s defending after they threw away their chance at a Wembley showdown with Birmingham.
Parkinson stated: “We’ve thrown away the chance to go to Wembley. Comfortable in the game at two nil and then two really poor goals, particularly the second one, all we’ve got to do is head the ball out the box.”
Parkinson now has to pick his players up ahead of a crucial League One clash against Bolton at the Racecourse Ground.
A trip to Wembley would have been something for the Red Dragons fans to savour, now all eyes are on securing promotion to the Championship.
