Wrexham need to improve in order to secure promotion and a strong run of home games should be a boost for Phil Parkinson.
Tuesday’s game at Forest Green Rovers felt like a big one.
Wrexham needed to respond after a 1-0 defeat at Gillingham on Saturday afternoon and a game against relegation-threatened Forest Green Rovers seemed like a chance to get back on track.
Emmanuel Osadebe opened the scoring after just three minutes though, leaving Wrexham to try and break down a team fighting for their lives and defending deep.
It looked like being a damaging defeat until Paul Mullin stepped up to score an injury-time penalty, sparing Parkinson’s blushes.
That’s just two points from a possible nine and we can understand Wrexham fans feeling a little frustrated at the moment.
The talent is there and whilst we think Parkinson should be questioned for the recent poor displays, we don’t think a sacking right now would help the situation.
Parkinson needs points and performances soon though and the fixture list may provide a welcome relief.
Wrexham home fixtures could be vital
The difference between Wrexham’s home and away form is remarkable.
Wrexham sit top of the home table in League Two, winning 12 of 16 home games whilst taking 38 points.
Only Mansfield Town have lost fewer home games in League Two this season and no team in League Two have scored as many home goals as Wrexham’s 44.
On the road, it’s a little bit different.
Wrexham sit 10th in the away table, winning just five of 18 games away from home.
We have seen Wrexham score just 16 goals away from home this season, whereas promotion rivals Stockport County, Mansfield Town and Crewe Alexandra have all scored more than 30.
This Jekyll and Hyde act has been incredibly frustrating to watch but Wrexham will hopefully find home comforts in the coming weeks.
Seven of Wrexham’s final 12 games come at the Racecourse, with four of the next six coming at home.
Stockport and Mansfield still both have to visit Wrexham and we would hope to see plenty of points being picked up thanks to that strong home record.
If Wrexham can keep picking up wins at home, automatic promotion is still within reach; after all, it’s only a three-point gap to top spot.
Recent performances have dampened the buzz, especially after three home games in a week, but a return to the Racecourse this weekend could be the catalyst for one big, final push.
