Reading stand in the way of Wrexham continuing their miraculous EFL Cup journey this season, with the fourth round of the competition being the reward.
Should Wrexham win the tie against Reading, they will progress to the fourth round for the first time in 48 years and could be rewarded with a match against an English giant.
Phil Parkinson’s side have been free-flowing in the competition this season, as they have scored six goals in the previous two rounds as they progressed beyond Championship rivals Hull City and Preston North End.
However, for the Red Dragons to progress, they must ignore one crucial detail to make it to the fourth round of this season’s EFL Cup.
Wrexham must ignore their 21st-century record against Reading
The Red Dragons had been struggling in the football league across the 21st century until the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac transformed the club for the better, seeing them rise through the divisions to the Championship.
Meanwhile, in the early part of the 21st century, Reading had been competing regularly in the Premier League and Championship before they got into financial difficulty, which has seen them drop to League One in recent seasons.
While the clubs have been on opposing journeys in the last 25 years, Reading managed to maintain an impressive record against Wrexham, as they won six of the seven fixtures in which they faced off.
Reading’s only loss to Wrexham in the 21st century came last season when they faced off at the Racecourse in August 2024, with the Red Dragons being on the right side of a 3-0 victory.

Wrexham and Reading will face off in the EFL Cup for the first time ever
The Red Dragons and Reading have played each other in a cup competition previously, but this was in the FA Cup, with the two clubs never being drawn against each other in the EFL Cup before.

Wrexham’s EFL Cup meeting with Reading will be the first in any major domestic cup since the 1956-57 FA Cup third round.
The Red Dragons emerged victorious in that fixture back in January 1957, with a 2-1 win away at Reading.
