Wrexham faced West Brom in their first Championship home game for 43 years.

Phil Parkinson made one change from the team that lost to Southampton on the opening day as James McClean replaced Liberato Cacace. Striker Kieffer Moore was fit to start following an injury scare.

West Brom took the lead in the 20th minute as Isaac Price found himself unmarked in the penalty area and slid the ball home with an excellent finish.

Wrexham drew level just before half time after good play down the right flank by Moore saw his cross eventually find Lewis O’Brien who drilled the ball into the roof of the net.

West Brom took the lead once again as Jed Wallace’s shot beat Danny Ward at the near post before Price got his second of the game with a free header from six yards.

Sam Smith did grab a consolation goal but there was no time for another dramatic comeback for the Red Dragons.

Not the start that Parkinson would have wanted and it is now his job to dust the players off and get ready for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham player ratings vs West Brom

Wrexham suffer consecutive defeats at the start of the season, here are the Wrexham player ratings from the clash against West Brom.

Danny Ward – 3

Will be bitterly disappointed to be beaten so easily at his near post for West Brom’s second goal, fans will once again be debating the decision to drop Okonkwo.

Max Cleworth – 6

Calm in possession and defended well alongside Coady up against the considerable threat of Karlan Grant.

Conor Coady – 6

Marshalled the back three well with his intelligence and reading of the game. Had a good chance to give his side the lead in the second half from a corner.

Lewis Brunt – 3

Really struggled to contain the excellent Tom Fellows. Booked in the first half for a foul on the winger and then lost Price for the opening goal. A nervy performance from the young defender and Parkinson may accelerate his plans to add more experience to his back line.

Ryan Barnett – 6

A constant outlet for Wrexham on the right flank and produced some decent deliveries into the box. Will need to improve consistency of his crosses throughout the campaign when given the time and space.

James McClean – 5

Worked hard as always down the left flank and had a couple of efforts at goal in the first half. At times left Brunt isolated.

Matty James – 6

Anchored the midfield well. Was overrun at times in the first half but used his experience and leadership to steady the ship. Neat and tidy on the ball as always.

George Dobson – 7

Typical busy display from Dobson in midfield, tidy on the ball and won a lot of second balls and 50/50 challenges to help get his side back in the contest.

Lewis O’Brien – 8

Wrexham’s best player and showed why the club initially broke their transfer record to sign him. Excellent finish to draw his side level and was everywhere in midfield. A player with real energy but quality on the ball.

Josh Windass – 6

Was Wrexham’s brightest player in the opening half hour before unfortunately leaving the stage early with what looked like a hamstring injury. Huge blow.

Kieffer Moore – 7

Worked extremely hard up top and provided a focal point for his team. No surprise he was dominant in the air but also ran the channels well, in particular to set up O’Brien for his goal.

Substitutes-

Nathan Broadhead – 6

Replaced Windass just before the half hour mark for his Wrexham debut. Could have opened his Wrexham account with an effort just past the post at the start of the second period.

Ryan Longman – 6

Replaced Barnett with just over twenty minutes remaining and produced an excellent cross for Smith to score.

Sam Smith – 6

Replaced Matty James with ten minutes remaining and will be pleased to open his account in the Championship.
