After a 15-year absence from the competition, Wrexham are back playing football in the EFL Trophy. The opposition – Newcastle United U21s, a team stacked full of dazzling young talent.
By no means will this be an easy game and Wrexham will want to kick off their group in style, eager to grab some silverware this season following the bitter disappointment of exiting this year’s Carabao Cup in the early stages to Bradford on penalties.
So who can we expect to see strutting their stuff on the Racecourse ground tonight? Here’s our predicted lineup.

Wrexham Predicted XI vs Newcastle U21s
Here’s how we think Phil Parkinson will field his side for tonight’s cup fixture.

We think a debut is in order tonight, with Arthur Okonkwo finalising a loan deal to Wrexham from Arsenal on deadline day.
The hosts will also be without veteran winger and summer signing James McClean. He was called up to the Republic of Ireland squad, which means he’ll play no part in this cup tie. That’s pretty remarkable in itself!
Jacob Mendy will come in to replace him. A more than competent replacement.
A tantalising strike force of Sam Dalby and Ollie Palmer will hopefully mean we see goals tonight.
How will the game play out…
It’s not going to be easy, but Wrexham should have more than enough quality to beat Newcastle’s youth. We think they’ll go for it, with goals pouring in at the Racecourse. We’ll say 3-0.
