Wrexham picked up another crucial victory on Saturday afternoon with James McClean absolutely vital against Notts County.

After beating Sutton United in midweek, Wrexham simply had to back it up at home against Notts County.

Steven Fletcher proved to be the match-winner, firing home a fine first-half strike to secure a 1-0 victory.

Wrexham had to really dig in and battle against a Notts County side who dominated possession – and nobody embodied that more than James McClean.

James McClean combative v Notts County

McClean lined up as the left wing back in Wrexham’s setup and he turned in a strong display.

The 34-year-old is a tried and tested performer and he certainly turned in a positive performance against Notts County.

Two shots and two key passes is a good start, just what you want from your wing back.

Three aerials won, three clearances and one interception show that McClean was doing the dirty work on the defensive side too.

Yet what really stands out is that McClean racked up nine tackles all on his own.

As a comparison, Notts County recorded 12 as a team with McClean not far behind that tally.

The former Wigan Athletic man was one of only two players on the pitch – the other being Elliot Lee – to make more than three tackles.

McClean was at his combative best against Notts County and he certainly helped nullify their main threat Jodi Jones.

Jones has racked up a ridiculous 20 assists this season but McClean contribute to him having no key passes at all against Wrexham.

Wrexham will need experienced heads to come up with big performances in this push for promotion.

Veteran striker Fletcher came up with the big goal on Saturday and McClean made his presence felt, doing anything to stop Notts County – and it worked as Wrexham landed a vital 1-0 win.
