Wrexham’s aims under the ownership of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have always been clear cut; climb up the divisions as fast as possible.
The Reds have fulfilled that aim by sealing back-to-back promotions and next campaign, they’ll be playing League One football for the first time in 19 years.
Some owners would settle for consolidating in the second tier and executive director Humphrey Ker would be happy with that however, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds don’t plan on stopping there.
Reynolds has already fired a clear message to those who attempt to stand in Wrexham’s way, claiming he’ll do whatever it takes to get his side into the Championship.
The Hollywood owners aren’t the only figures with big dreams and aspirations, with goalkeeper Luke McNicholas now sharing his.

Luke McNicholas outlines his ultimate ‘aim’ at Wrexham
Signed on loan from Sligo Rovers in August last year, McNicholas was snapped up permanently by Wrexham for £100k in the January transfer window.
The 24-year-old was captured as a third-choice goalkeeper behind veteran Mark Howard and starter Arthur Okonkwo.
Although yet to make an appearance in the league, McNicholas has impressed in the EFL Trophy, with Phil Parkinson describing his performance against Crewe Alexandra as ‘superb’ back in October.
The Republic of Ireland shot-stopper hasn’t let a lack of opportunities diminish his confidence, revealing his clear aim has always been to become the number one keeper.
Speaking to Mayo Live, McNicholas said: “I want to become the number one goalkeeper at Wrexham. That’s why I signed.”
McNicholas’ ambition has to be admired; he didn’t want to arrive in Wales and sit on the bench, instead doing everything in his power to grab that number one jersey.
Wrexham’s goalkeeper situation assessed
Wrexham’s clear plan is to sign Okonkwo permanently, and that has always been the case.
McElhenney has said recently he’s confident about getting a deal for the 22-year-old over the line, and while that has filled supporters with promise, nothing has yet materialised, with Parkinson explaining the ‘complications’ he’s had in the market.
Regardless of whether Wrexham sign the former Arsenal goalkeeper, the Reds do need a new number-one for the next campaign as it wouldn’t be wise to rely on veteran Howard or youngster McNicholas.
The talented Irishman is clear about his intentions to become a mainstay in the starting XI, and whilst he may get a chance in pre-season, his game time will probably be restricted to the cup competitions instead.
Wrexham supporters would have been impressed with what they saw from McNicholas in three EFL trophy appearances and as he’s committed his future to 2026, he is seen as a long-term investment.
