Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has now praised young striker Jake Bickerstaff, who has started the season superbly.

The 21-year-old did not make a single appearance in the National League last season, but has started upfront this season with Paul Mullin currently sidelined with injury.

The youngster has scored twice in his four appearances so far, and despite his age and inexperience, is proving to be a useful asset upfront.

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson has praised the striker for his efforts so far.

“Jake is a very good finisher, a clinical finisher,” he stated.

“He scored a couple of goals in the FA Trophy last year and he was eager to get off the mark in the league for us, and he has done that.

“I am pleased for him. I have said all along that we have got to give players an opportunity if they perform and I thought Jake did really well against Wigan.

“He made great runs and he has trained well. We see these players all the time in training and who’s in form and who’s not.

“His finishing has been really good in training and he deserved the opportunity against Walsall, and all of a sudden he is a real bonus for us.”

Do Wrexham still need a striker?

The previous expectation was that Bickerstaff would head out on loan for the season, but perhaps he has offered Wrexham an internal solution until Mullin returns.

With Mullin likely to come back within the next month, Wrexham may not need to sign another forward, as previously anticipated, if Bickerstaff can keep this form up.

Whilst he is raw, he has started well enough that he should come into consideration as an option, but if Wrexham do sign another forward, then he should head out on loan. At this stage of his career, playing regularly will be important, and a loan may even be an option by the time Mullin returns if he does drop down the pecking order.
