Andy Cannon claims he’d ’do anything’ to achieve remarkable feat at Wrexham this season

Wrexham midfielder Andy Cannon has been one of several stars in their race for promotion out of League Two.

Wrexham signed Andy Cannon in December 2022 as Phil Parkinson bolstered his midfield and brought a wealth of EFL experience after tasting promotion with Stockport County in 2022.

Following his promotion to League Two with Stockport, the 27-year-old returned to his parent club Hull City but was deemed surplus to requirements by the Tigers after making just five Championship appearances in the first half of the season.

Parkinson saw this as an opportunity to improve his squad by signing a promotion winner and he formed a particularly fruitful partnership with Elliot Lee in the engine room as the Reds clinched the National League title.

Cannon contributed towards that success with 16 appearances and is quietly becoming an unsung hero in Wrexham’s squad.

As an ever-reliable figure in Parkinson’s side, the midfielders’ energetic and industrious performances deserve more praise than he’s received, especially given he’s been a regular starter during a period when the manager has chopped and changed his starting XI.

Cannon has started in 16 of Wrexham’s last 17 matches and has his sights set on achieving a third consecutive promotion this term.

Andy Cannon would ‘do anything’ to achieve three consecutive promotions

After winning back-to-back National League promotions with Stockport and Wrexham, Cannon is desperate to achieve a remarkable feat by making it the a in a row.

There aren’t many players in the history of football, regardless of what they go on to achieve, who can say they’ve won promotion three years on the bounce, but there’s a real possibility that the former Hull City midfielder will join that elite club this season.

Cannon, who already runs through brick walls for Wrexham on the pitch, has claimed he would ‘do anything’ to make that dream a reality.

“As a team, getting promoted is the main thing but three promotions in a row would be a great few years for me as a player personally,” Cannon told the Leader. “I would do anything for this team to get promoted this season again and do back-to-back promotions at Wrexham.

“That would be brilliant but we know there is still a long way to go so we have just got to stay fully focused and try to win our games.

“It is a tough league and there are some good teams but all the players and staff will be doing everything they can to get promoted.”

Wrexham can help Cannon achieve remarkable feat

Wrexham got back on track by hammering Accrington Stanley 4-0 last weekend and after watching MK Dons beat Mansfield in midweek, the Reds are perfectly poised to not only finish in the top three but win the title.

Only three points separate them from leaders Mansfield and they are level on points with Cannon’s former club, Stockport, although they do have a game in hand.

Simply put, if Wrexham can consistently perform as they did against Accrington, particularly away from home, they have a great chance of achieving promotion while helping the midfield titan achieve a remarkable feat in the process.
