Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has issued a positive update on the fitness of one star ahead of today’s clash against Morecambe.
Wrexham are firmly in the hunt for the League Two title as only three points separate them from leaders Mansfield.
The Reds are fresh from their convincing 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley last weekend and will want to end their difficult away form having won just one of their last seven matches.
A trip to Morecambe, who are level on points with the final play-off place, isn’t the easiest of tests for Phil Parkinson’s side, although they did win the reverse fixture 6-0 as Paul Mullin scored a hat-trick.
Ahead of the clash this afternoon, Parkinson has been dealt some positive news on defender Thomas O’Connor, who returned to training this week while George Evans is progressing rapidly.
George Evans is ‘back on the grass’
Evans has been one of Wrexham’s best players this term, however, the midfield anchor has been missing since the 2-1 away win over Sutton United in the middle of February.
The 29-year-old does a great job of acting as a defensive screen and without him, Parkinson has had to experiment by putting James McClean in midfield.
Although that has proven to be a tactical masterstroke, the return of Evans will be a huge boost to Wrexham in their push for promotion.
Luckily, Parkinson has provided a positive update on the midfielder’s fitness and it shouldn’t be long before he’s back in the squad.
“George Evans was back on the grass yesterday and as I’m stood here watching, he’s out there now and that progress is really positive for us,” Parkinson told the Wrexham official website.
Evans has been a huge miss
There isn’t anyone in the squad like Evans who can dispossess the opposition and protect the defence with his presence.
Previously described as a “unique” player, the former Wigan Athletic midfielder has been missed in the engine room, particularly away from home where Wrexham are required to do more defending.
In the three away matches he missed in February, the Reds failed to win any of them and only scored twice.
Of course, the outcome of those results may not have changed with him in the side, but his leadership qualities and ability to complement the likes of Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee make Wrexham a much better team.
With 11 games left of the season to go, Evans will be eager to play a vital role, just as he has throughout the campaign.
