Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds made the surprise purchase of Wrexham in 2021 and now other celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon.

In a story that shocked the footballing world at the time, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney tookover at Wrexham almost three years ago.

The two Hollywood superstars had big intentions of turning a lowly club into a global force, although many questioned their motives.

There were fears that the move was a publicity stunt aimed to heighten the actors’ profiles in the UK.

After guiding the club through unparalleled progression, it is fair to say that those fears have now diminished, and supporters from across the globe are now tuning in to watch Wrexham.

The Reds are fighting for promotion to League One after winning the National League title in record-breaking fashion last term.

Wrexham have been truly transformed since their takeover, and now some celebrities are hoping to follow in their footsteps.

Much like Reynolds and McElhenney, the Irish pop group Boyzone are looking to become “the face” of National League North side, Chorley.

Boyzone using Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as inspiration

As reported by The Guardian, Boyzone want to develop a partnership with Chorley and will attend their home against Solihull Moors on Saturday.

Supporters of the National League North side will hope that celebrity backing will help spur the club up the pyramid, similar to the success that Wrexham have had with their Hollywood owners.

The clubs’ chief operating officer, Tom Clarke, said the duet had come about after Boyzone’s Shane Lynch attended a few of their games this season.

Although it is hoped that Chorley can have similar success to Wrexham, Julian Vass, chair of the Magpies supporters trust, has played down their ambitions.

“Having a famous person come on board can hopefully only be good. We’re not expecting a Wrexham style [success] but anything to help the club and community move forward can only be good.”

Paving the way

Reynolds and McElhenney have paved the way for other celebrities to jump on the bandwagon and get involved with a non-league club.

Wrexham saw the power that having two global celebrities on board can have and while Boyzone aren’t on the same level in terms of their worldwide status, they can still have a huge impact on Chorley.

Most people in the UK know who the band are and it is hoped they can attract a new demographic of supporters.

The Non-League side are already expecting increased support at their game against Solihull on Saturday, which shows their impact is already in full swing, while it is hoped that Chorley can attract a new demographic of supporters, like what Wrexham have done.
