Wrexham’s popularity has come with questions; what are McElhenney and Reynolds really like, away from the cameras and the attention.
Former Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster – brought back to the club last season – has now offered his verdict having been asked that exact question.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, Foster has admitted that it’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star McElhenney who is the ‘brains’ behind the Wrexham operation.
Foster noted that Reynolds is, of course, invested in the project but believes that McElhenney sees Wrexham as his ‘baby’.
Foster now feels that Reynolds has ‘fallen head over heels’ with the club but is more relaxed than McElhenney in his approach to Wrexham.
The former stopper added that the pair aren’t best friends at all and hadn’t even spoken before combining at Wrexham, which only adds to the magic of the story.
“Rob is the brains behind it, Rob is fully in,” said Foster. “Don’t get me wrong they’re both fully in but Rob, you can tell this is his baby, genuinely it’s his baby, Wrexham is.”
“Ryan, I think at first he joined along for the ride and was like, ‘Yeah I’ll help you out.’ And then he’s fallen head over heels in for it as well. He’s a bit more the kind of relaxed one, whereas Rob is, ‘No, we want to do something here.’”
“No, they’re not,” he added when asked whether McElhenney and Reynolds are best friends. “They didn’t even know each other. Before they started the Wrexham thing, he had never even spoken to him. He just sort of reached out and said, ‘I’m going to do this crazy thing, do you want to be part of it?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah ok, cool.’”
Having experienced promotion last season, McElhenney and Reynolds will be looking to repeat the trick this season.
Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Gillingham – and some unfavourable results around Wrexham – have made that task a little more difficult.
Still, League One was just a dream for Wrexham fans a few years ago but it’s now a realistic aim with McElhenney and Reynolds at the helm, showing the rapid development in a short space of time.
