Wrexham have been dealt a major setback with Ben Sheaf ruled out for around 10 weeks, and Phil Parkinson has admitted the midfielder’s absence is a real blow during a crucial stage of the season.

Sheaf has been a regular presence in midfield throughout the 2025-26 campaign, logging 28 appearances and establishing himself as one of Parkinson’s trusted starters. Losing him for an extended spell forces Wrexham into reshuffling options in the centre of the pitch. The manager did not attempt to downplay the impact when speaking publicly about the diagnosis.

Ben Sheaf ruled out for 10 weeks with knee injury

Parkinson confirmed that Sheaf’s knee issue will sideline him for approximately 10 weeks, ruling him out for a significant portion of the run-in. The midfielder’s 24 starts underline how frequently he has been relied upon this season. That level of involvement makes the absence particularly disruptive for team selection.

“Ben’s not looking good and that’s a real blow for us. As much as there was a feeling of excitement after the win; the coaching staff and I had that always in the back our minds.”

Parkinson said the injury was confirmed after further assessment, leaving little room for optimism in the short term. He then turned his attention to how the squad must respond collectively during Sheaf’s rehabilitation period.

“Ben will get the best possible treatment and come back strong but from our point of view, it’s opportunities for other players.”

The manager’s message was clear that selection changes will follow while Sheaf works through his recovery programme. The 10-week timeframe places him out of action for a sustained stretch of fixtures.

Nathan Broadhead and other injury concerns

Sheaf is not the only player currently dealing with a fitness issue. Nathan Broadhead has been managing a groin problem, although Parkinson suggested the situation is less severe than the midfielder’s setback. The forward’s progress has been monitored closely in recent days.

“Broady has a slight problem with his groin, but he’s making good progress. We never anticipated that to be too long.”

Parkinson explained that Broadhead’s issue is not expected to develop into a long-term absence. That assessment offers some reassurance in the attacking department while other areas of the squad are stretched.

Elsewhere, Matthew James has been sidelined with a small fracture in his toe, limiting midfield depth further. Liberato Cacace is working through a low-grade hamstring problem, while Zak Vyner is due back in training next week as part of his recovery plan. Vyner’s return to the training ground marks a tangible step forward in his rehabilitation schedule.

Contract extensions provide positive news

Amid the injury setbacks, Wrexham have secured positive developments with Ollie Rathbone and George Dobson both signing contract extensions. Rathbone has scored six goals in 16 appearances since returning in December, adding attacking output from midfield during a demanding spell. He spoke openly about his commitment after extending his stay.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign a new contract. It’s a special day for me and my family. I’m over the moon.”

Rathbone said the new deal meant a great deal to him and his family. Dobson, who has made 30 appearances this season, echoed that enthusiasm when discussing his own extension.

“It’s been an amazing 19 months. I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s been a fantastic journey so far.”

Dobson said he remains fully committed to the project at the club. Those renewals secure two regular starters at a time when Sheaf’s 10-week absence forces midfield changes.
