Wrexham club captain Ben Tozer has spoken about why he would choose Wrexham over a move to Saudi Arabia amidst an exodus of players and managers to the Middle East.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s headline-grabbing move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in January, an increasing number of players and managers have departed Europe’s big leagues for teams in the Saudi Pro League but Tozer believes a move to Wrexham would be far more exciting.

Ben Tozer explains why players should choose Wrexham over Saudi Arabia

In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Wrexham club captain Ben Tozer outlined why he feels Wrexham is a more appealing option than Saudi Arabia as the like of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Roberto Firmino, and managers Nuno Espirito Santo, ex-Benfica boss Jorge Jesus and Steven Gerrard have all joined teams in the Saudi Pro League in the last 12 months.

“Listen, the money is the money, of course, in Saudi Arabia,” the defender said.

“That’s something that sets them and their families up for life, you can’t really begrudge them.”

“But playing for this club is so exciting at the moment, you know, it’s really on the up,” he added.

“The stadium sells out every week, we won a trophy last year, we’re hoping to emulate that again this season.”

“All the noise around the club, whether you like it or you don’t like it, it’s exciting, it’s positive so it’s a great place to be and I’m thankful I’m here.”

Ben Tozer’s time at Wrexham

Ben Tozer was among the first batch of players signed by Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

Famed for his missile-like long throw, Tozer joined Wrexham from Cheltenham Town for an undisclosed fee on August 27, 2021, and was quickly made club captain – a joint-captaincy role alongside ‘first-team captain,’ Luke Young.

The 33-year-old defender has since gone on to appear in 89 matches for Wrexham, scoring on five occasions.

Following Wrexham’s promotion-winning campaign in 2022/23, Tozer was named in the National League team of the season alongside teammates Elliot Lee and Paul Mullin.
