Ben Tozer was one of several players who departed Wrexham this summer but the towering centre-back still keeps in touch with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Tozer became a fan favourite during his time at the Racecourse Ground, with the 34-year-old appearing 134 times for Wrexham across a three-year stint.

Like captain Luke Young and fellow defensive stalwart Aaron Hayden, Tozer left Wales on a high this summer following successive promotions and memories to last a lifetime.

The Englishman was brought to Wrexham by Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in the summer of 2021 after leaving Cheltenham Town.

Dropping down to the National League was a risk for Tozer but like many who made the same decision, it paid dividends and he played an integral part in the club’s recent success.

And although he was released this summer, since joining Forest Green Rovers, the veteran defender still regularly keeps in touch with McElhenney and Reynolds.

The classy thing Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds do for Ben Tozer

Many football club owners would wish a departing player well for the future and rarely, if ever, speak to them again.

That is why McElhenney and Reynolds are unique in how they conduct themselves behind the scenes, with the Hollywood superstars showing their class towards current and former players.

Despite Tozer leaving the Racecourse Ground this summer, they still text the defender to ask how he is and how he’s getting on at his new club. It’s a mark of respect from the duo and it’s something that is rarely seen in the modern game.

Speaking before Wrexham lost 4-2 against Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup, Tozer told Sky Sports: “They are very personable. They will text you. Even since I have been at Forest Green, they texted me and asked how it is, not just how is the new club, but also mentioned the club as well.”

Tozer could return to Wrexham in a coaching capacity

Although his current focus is on getting Forest Green back into League Two, Tozer hasn’t ruled out the possibility of him returning to Wrexham in the future.

When asked about that prospect, he responded: “I have had a couple of really good chats with both of them. They have both took the time out to make the effort to speak to me which was nice.”

“You never know what could happen in the future with the relationship we have and stuff but it is great the way they have dealt with it and dealt with me, and dealt with everyone really,” he added.

It would make perfect sense for the veteran to rejoin Wrexham in a coaching capacity and given his incredible relationship with McElhenney and Reynolds, that is made all the more possible.

Don’t be surprised to see Tozer standing on the touchline in the future as a coach, whether that’s at Wrexham or elsewhere.
