Wrexham are ready to take on Chelsea in a pre-season friendly with Phil Parkinson looking to spring something of a surprise over in the United States.
Wrexham opened the ‘Wrex Coast Tour’ with a 1-1 draw against Premier League opposition in Bournemouth.
Phil Parkinson’s side now head to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, with Chelsea the next opponents.
The Blues will be able to field a star-studded lineup against Wrexham and few will really expect a positive result for Parkinson and co.
Still, this is only pre-season and it’s all about fitness levels as Wrexham ramp up preparations for the League One campaign.
Reece James on Wrexham
This is another great chance for Wrexham’s ever-growing American fanbase to watch the side in action.
A number of Wales-based fans have made the trip too, ready to cheer the side on against rather lofty opposition.
Wrexham’s story has really captured the imagination around the world with the presence of both Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds sparking a new wave of fans from the States.
You would assume by now that everybody would be well aware of the Wrexham story, with Hollywood owners completely changing the trajectory of the club.
Chelsea defender Reece James seemingly hasn’t been paying too much attention though having been asked about Wrexham before the game.
Speaking on Chelsea’s official YouTube channel, James was quizzed on what he thought about Wrexham’s incredible rise in recent years.
James was completely honest, admitting that he doesn’t actually know too much about Wrexham outside of the back-to-back promotions.
That is all James really knows; whether he knows about McElhenney, Reynolds and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is unclear as he didn’t reference them at all in his answer.
“The Wrexham story, I don’t know too much about the story but I believe they got promoted back-to-back, something like that? That’s the most that I know,” said James.
We can’t blame James too much here; he has had more than enough on his plate in recent years.
The Chelsea and England ace has been plagued by injuries in recent times and will have been fully focused on getting himself back in top shape.
James will hope for a strong performance against Wrexham and perhaps this meeting will lead to him looking a little more into the club’s rise.
If James hasn’t seen ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, then he is certainly missing out – and Wrexham fans will certainly make themselves known to him in the States with the support simply off the charts this summer.
