Wrexham could be set to benefit greatly from discussions taking place within the EFL Board.

Wrexham are back playing in the second tier of English football for the first time since 1982.

The Red Dragons picked up a 3-2 win over Norwich City last time out, moving them up to 16th in the Championship table.

With seven points secured so far, Phil Parkinson’s men sit three points adrift of the top six at present.

However, one key change being discussed by the EFL could mean they no longer need to finish in the top six to secure a play-off spot.

EFL could expand Championship play-offs

Since the competition began, the Championship play-offs have included teams finishing between third and sixth.

Third and sixth face off in one semi-final, with the winner of that tie playing the winner of the two-leg semi between fourth and fifth.

However, there is now a chance that the Championship play-offs could be expanded.

Sky Sports News have shared an update on the situation via X/Twitter on Tuesday.

They wrote: “The EFL Board is considering expanding the Championship play-offs to include the teams finishing seventh and eighth, with widespread backing from club executives.”

It opens the door for Wrexham and another 17 teams to secure an unexpected play-off spot by finishing seventh or eighth.

How many points do Wrexham need to finish 8th

In 2024/25, Blackburn Rovers and Millwall would have taken the extra two play-off places if the format had been introduced.

Blackburn ended the campaign on 66 points with a +5 goal difference, with Millwall just behind them with a -2 goal difference.

The season prior, Hull City took home sixth spot with 70 points, while Middlesbrough were eighth with 69.

It’s still not going to be easy for a team like Wrexham to make the play-offs, considering they have never finished in the top half of the second tier before.

But an expanded format would go a long way towards helping Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac achieve their goal of taking Wrexham to the Premier League by the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
