Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have enjoyed great success thanks to their Welcome to Wrexham documentary series.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham from the club’s Supporters Trust over four years ago.

They set about raising the club’s profile by launching a documentary style series on Disney+ named Welcome to Wrexham.

McElhenney was inspired to buy Wrexham by Sunderland after he oversaw Humphrey Ker watching the Sunderland Till I Die series on Netflix.

Now, another club in the EFL are set to launch their own behind-the-scenes series to cover their team, and the owner has admitted to copying Rob and Ryan’s Wrexham.

Portsmouth owner admits to copying Wrexham

Birmingham City, who Tom Brady is invested in, are set to release their own docu-series in 2025.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth, who Wrexham will be playing in the Championship next term, plan to do the same.

Pompey were bought by former Disney chairman Michael Eisner back in 2017, and he has now admitted he thought about bringing cameras into the club years ago but opted against it.

As per Sportico, he said: “I didn’t want to be a Hollywood stereotype. I’m also not a movie star.”

However, Sportico have reported that Portsmouth are planning to produce their own behind-the-scenes content for the 2025/26 campaign.

He continued on Wrexham: “We’ll be copying them to a degree. It’s complicated. … You have to think hard about how you want to invest.”
