Fans have just noticed an ’embarrassing’ mistake at end of the first season of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

Until recently, Wrexham were floundering in the fifth tier of English football and the future looked uncertain. Now, the club is on a huge upwards trajectory thanks to the work of two Hollywood stars.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have transformed the fortunes of the North Wales club since taking over in 2020. Part of the recent success has been down to a Disney+ documentary called ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which gives fans a peak behind the curtain as what goes on at the club.

The series was a worldwide smash, boasting the club’s global appeal immeasurably.

The first season of Welcome to Wrexham charts the club’s failed bid to earn promotion to League Two, something they managed to rectify this season after winning the National League.

The final episode of the Disney+ series sees the co-owners promise to come back stronger next season, which we all know they do.

However, as the camera pans out to the tactics board, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Reynolds and McElhenney used twelve players in a formation rather than the permitted eleven.

To be fair to the pair, it’s an easy mistake to make, and we wouldn’t put it past them doing it on purpose for a little comedy value!

What we know about season 2 of the Disney+ doc

The good news is that there will be a second season of Welcome to Wrexham. Filming has been ongoing throughout this season, capturing moments on and off the field as the club finally clinches promotion.

The bad news, however, is that we don’t know when it will be released. Filming finished in May 2023, and given that season one launched in August 2022, it’s reasonable to expect season two to arrive in August 2023 ahead of the new season.

Rob McElhenney confirmed that the second season was in the works, announcing the news on Twitter following the season one finale.

“Season two will return next year,” wrote McElhenney. He then added: “I have a clause in my contract that stipulates I will not do anything less than 16 seasons of a TV show.”
