Wrexham supporters were left feeling delighted on Monday as midfielder George Evans signed a new contract with the club.

Wrexham pulled off an outstanding coup on transfer deadline day last summer as George Evans arrived from Championship side Millwall.

The Manchester City Academy graduate had previously made 147 appearances at Championship level at clubs such as Reading, Derby County and the Lions before moving to North Wales.

In what was a shock move for the defensive midfielder, Evans soon made himself at home, operating superbly at the base of midfield.

Evans showed his class throughout the 2023/24 campaign as Wrexham sealed promotion to League One while he featured 27 times in the league.

The 29-year-old has since been rewarded with a new two-year contract at the Racecourse Ground, putting pen to paper on Monday.

For Wrexham to tie down Evans to a new contract was an unbelievable piece of business.

The experienced midfielder is poised to play a vital role in League One as he continues screening the back three and oozes class in possession.

Evans did have one year remaining on his previous contract, putting him at risk of leaving on a free transfer next summer, although he explains it was a no-brainer committing his future to the Reds.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official website, the former England under-19 international said: “It feels like home, and I’ve loved every minute since I walked through the door.

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity that the Club and the Gaffer gave me and I hope I’m repaying them.

“The Gaffer has been incredible since I’ve been here, and this has been one of the best decisions I have made in my football career.”

Phil Parkinson turned George Evans’ career around

Wrexham signed Evans during a low point in his career. The ex-Derby star was pushed down the pecking order at Millwall and rarely featured in the 2022/23 Championship season.

The Englishman played just three times in all competitions and knew he had to leave in the summer of 2023, otherwise, his career would stagnate further.

Luckily, Phil Parkinson took a gamble on the talented midfielder and the rest, as they say, is history.

Evans played a phenomenal role in helping Wrexham achieve promotion and even showcased his versatility by slotting in at centre-back when needed.

Parkinson deserves huge credit for luring him to the club on deadline day as many eyebrows were raised at the time, purely because he’s capable of playing in League One or the Championship.

Reacting to the news of him sealing a new contract, the Wrexham boss said: “We’re really pleased that George has signed his new contract.

“He came in and played a pivotal role for us and I’m looking forward to working with him again this season.”
