Wrexham are beginning to make plans for the 2025 summer transfer window, which involve a former Manchester United player.

Wrexham have been no stranger to signing big names in the last four and a bit years.

The North Americans have backed the Red Dragons heavily, with fans no doubt pleased that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney ignored warnings over signing Paul Mullin back in 2021.

Mullin dropped down from League One to the National League in order to join and was the first of many major transfer coups the club have pulled off.

James McClean was another impressive capture, given his experience in the Premier League and Championship.

More recently, Sam Smith became Wrexham’s record transfer with his seven-figure move from fellow League One side, Reading.

Now, the high-flying Welsh club are looking to improve their ranks even more with the addition of a Europe-proven star.

Wrexham target Tom Lawrence was part of Manchester United history

Reports emerged this week that Wrexham want to sign Tom Lawrence from Scottish giants Rangers when his contract expires later this year.

Lawrence is currently earning £22,000-a-week with the Gers, whom he joined from Derby County back in 2022.

It was Manchester United whom the attacking midfielder began his senior career with, however, arriving in their youth ranks from Everton in 2002.

Lawrence’s one and only senior appearance for the Red Devils came on May 6th, 2014, against Hull City.

He played 70 minutes of the 3-1 win before being subbed off for Man Utd great Ryan Giggs, in what proved to be the latter’s final appearance for the club.

Speaking back in January 2024, as per the Sun, Lawrence commented on that moment, admitting he will be ‘forever greatful’ to Giggs for giving him that chance.

He said: “I started the game and he came on for me. It was his last ever game for Manchester United as he was player/ manager at the time.

“I think I played 70 minutes and then he came on. He was a big hero growing up, there were a few of them.

“But he gave me my Manchester United debut so I’ll be forever grateful. Nothing will ever come close to that.”

Tom Lawrence compared to Wrexham midfielders

Should Lawrence sign, it will solve a major problem Wrexham have had throughout 2024/25 – a lack of cover for Elliot Lee.

The number 10 has been one of the club’s biggest goal threats, but when he’s not in the side, the Hollywood-owned team don’t have much of a threat through the middle.

Two of his goals this season have come in the Europa League, showing just how far Wrexham have come that they can now even think about signing players who have played in Europe as recently as 2024/25.
