Wrexham have played a major role in the EFL striking a new TV rights deal over in America.

The rise of Wrexham has been incredible to watch over the last few years.

This was a team going nowhere, stuck in the National League ever since relegation from League Two in 2008.

In came Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to change the story forever.

Wrexham are now a Football League club again but have become global news thanks to the club’s Hollywood owners and the subsequent ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series.

Rival fans may want to see Wrexham fail, but the entire Football League now looks set to benefit from Wrexham’s influence…

Wrexham influence as EFL strike new deal

The Daily Mail report that the EFL have struck a huge four-year, £148million deal for games to be shown outside of the UK.

It’s added that the nine-figure deal also features an agreement with Relevent Sports, which will see EFL games promoted in America.

Relevent Sports have secured the rights to games in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean with the deal showcasing the appetite for EFL games outside of the UK and Wales.

Crucially, it’s stated that Wrexham have played a key role in these deals.

The rise of Wrexham – and the huge money Disney have made from showing ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ – have left Americans more and more interested in EFL action.

It’s stated that Disney have raked in more than £400,000 per episode of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, showing the earning potential.

That is staggering money and it’s now no surprise that other American companies are looking to get in on the action.

Whether other EFL clubs can really have the pulling power of Wrexham remains to be seen; nobody else has McElhenney and Reynolds at the helm.

Still, the Wrexham story will now have far-reaching implications and other EFL clubs now stand to earn a little more cash – something which may not have happened without McElhenney and Reynolds arriving at the Racecourse.
