Humphrey Ker left baffled by what some Wrexham fans have been saying this season

It’s easy to forget that Wrexham were still plying their trade in the National League just two years ago.

Wrexham face Rotherham United in a League One meeting this weekend and are favourites to win.

Should they pick up the three points at the Racecourse Ground and results elsewhere go their way, the Red Dragons could end Saturday sat second in the table.

Even if Wrexham do not end up finishing behind Birmingham City this season, they are almost certainly going to get a shot at promotion via the play-offs in the 2024/25 season.

Should the Red Dragons indeed go up, they will have won three promotions on the spin – a simply insane record.

But even if a place in the 2025/26 Championship does elude them, this campaign has still been a major success for Wrexham, despite fan frustration showning at times.

Humphrey Ker confused by some Wrexham fan’s claims

It’s easy to forget, given their recent success, that the Welsh side were still playing National League football in 2023 and had been in that division for 15 years.

Though they eventually went on to dominate that league and finish second in League Two last term, their chances of winning another promotion in the current season seemed small.

Before a ball had been kicked, Wrexham were predicted to finish 19th in League One back in August.

Now, as per The Athletic, club chief Humphrey Ker has been commenting on expectations around the team and has been left confused by some fan’s claims regarding performances and manager Phil Parkinson.

He said: “Back in August at the Wycombe game, I was telling everyone, ‘Anything above 12th, we should build a statue of Phil’.

“Fans were saying the same to me. But we’ve gone from that to now, where we’ve been right up at the top of the table all season and massively outperformed all expectations, and yet I’m reading comments such as, ‘Can’t believe we scraped past Mansfield’. Or, ‘The manager is —-’.”

Humphrey Ker on Phil Parkinson

Parkinson was slammed by fans after the club suffered their first home defeat since March 2024 at the end of January versus Stevenage.

The Wrexham manager received criticism from supporters after another defeat to Leyton Orient last month as well.

Despite some patchy form in 2025, however, it’s clear the former Bolton Wanderers boss has done a tremendous job.

Speaking about Parkinson in the same interview, Ker stated: “Phil [Parkinson] isn’t a manager who is happy with stability,” he says. “Same for Rob and Ryan as well. If Rob has a philosophy that can be condensed into one sentence then it would be, ‘Why not us?’.

“He doesn’t care for conventional wisdom. He likes to break the mould. Phil, Steve Parkin and this group of players are all the same. They want to win. It’s why when people bag on them, it gets my goat.”
