Humphrey Ker makes teasing Wrexham investment admission amid Premier League dream

Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker has teased supporters about more investment being pumped into the club.

The dream from the moment Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over at Wrexham in 2021 was to take Wrexham to the Premier League.

It’s a feat that has been achieved by a few sides previously. Hull City, for instance, famously went from League Two football in 2003 to the Premier League in 2008 while Luton Town’s meteoric rise from National League to the top flight in eight years demonstrates that miracles can happen.

After being promoted with a record 111 points last term, Wrexham have started life in the fourth tier in fine fashion and are threatening to go on a fairytale journey of their own.

Phil Parkinson’s side have surpassed the halfway stage in second position, only five points behind leaders Stockport County.

The Red Dragons are dreaming of back-to-back promotions in what would be such a boost to the club financially.

It was revealed previously that Rob and Ryan had lost an estimated £10 million since taking over the club in 2021, although it was explained to the pair that if they were to sell Wrexham right now, they would get “far more” than £10 million.

However, if Wrexham did make the miraculous climb towards the Championship, executive director Humphrey Ker believes the Hollywood owners would be inundated with investment offers.

Humphrey Ker believes Wrexham would receive investment offers

Speaking to BBC Sport after Wrexham’s 4-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup, Ker was asked whether more funds would be required to maintain a meteoric rise, and when a further cash injection would be received.

He replied: “I don’t doubt when the time comes that more investment is required.

“We’ve often talked about that transition from the bottom of the Championship to the top end would require a huge amount of money, and from there to the Premier League even more. When the time is right I am very confident they [Reynolds and McElhenney] would be inundated with offers.”

While Wrexham conquered the National League in record-breaking style and few bumps in the road have been hit in League Two, promotion to League One would bring about new challenges that would raise the bar even higher.

Several big clubs have been stuck in the division for many years, including Portsmouth and Derby County, while Sunderland only escaped the clutches of the third tier in 2022.

There is no doubt that if the Red Dragons were to get promoted this season, further investment into the club would be desired as demonstrated by the difficulties other sides have had.

For now, though, the dream of investment and reaching the top flight is long in the future and Wrexham have to focus on navigating their way out of League Two.

They travel to strugglers Salford City on Saturday aiming to heap further pressure onto Stockport.
