Since arriving in Wales, Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker has hailed one ‘clever’ thing Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have done.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have proven many people wrong since taking over at Wrexham in February 2021.

Initially, there were question marks over their motive for owning a football club as they didn’t claim to know much about the sport.

Many felt they would use owning Wrexham as a tool to boost their profiles in the UK but instead, the Hollywood owners have written their own script.

Currently preparing for life in League One after achieving back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history, McElhenney and Reynolds can be proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker believes one ‘clever’ decision they made has played a pivotal role in their pursuit of success.

Humphrey Ker says Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have done something ‘clever’

McElhenney and Reynolds arrived into the world of the unknown when they tookover at Wrexham.

A football club is a unique business to be a part of and to achieve success, it’s impossible to do it alone.

The Hollywood superstars recognised this by hiring the correct people to carry out key roles within the club, a strategy that Ker describes as “clever and sensible” as it has helped alleviate the stress from their point of view.

Speaking on Dermot O’Leary’s show, Ker said: “I think one of things Rob and Ryan have been really clever and sensible about is putting people who know what they’re doing in place and letting them get on with it.

“I mean ultimately when it comes to transfers, when it comes to tactics, when it comes to anything that’s happening on the football side of things, that is left entirely to Phil Parkinson and Steve Parkin and all the people who know what they’re doing and are qualified in that respect.

“They brought Shaun Harvey and Fleur Robinson in; people who had accumulated over 50 years experience in football. They’ve been advised by Les Reid who is the FA technical director and we were just like, ‘if you know what you’re doing, please tell us what to do’.”

McElhenney and Reynolds have set the tone for owning a football club

Upon arriving at Wrexham, the Hollywood duo could have easily undermined other members of staff and attempted to run the football club their way.

However, they’ve instead decided to learn from some of the most experienced people in the sport, including Shaun Harvey and the FA technical director, Les Reid.

Ultimately, this is a decision that has paid off because it has mostly alleviated any of the initial mistakes they’d make and fast-tracked Wrexham up the divisions.

A lot of football club owners tend to ignore more knowledgeable members of staff and then receive criticism for making multiple errors.

McElhenney and Reynolds, meanwhile, have done the exact opposite by taking advice on board and trusting those in place to run the Welsh side correctly.

It’s a clever decision that has paved the way for their success, and long may it continue.
