Wrexham secured their fourth consecutive away victory with a gritty and resilient 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Steven Fletcher’s winning goal was a moment to savour for the travelling Wrexham fans as Phil Parkinson’s side kept up the pressure on Wycombe Wanderers in the fight for promotion.
Arthur Okonkwo barely had a shot to save on the evening although Huddersfield striker Dion Charles should have tested the keeper just before half time as he blazed over after being put through on goal.
Eoghan O’Connell and Thomas O’Connor were impressive in their defensive displays whilst Matty James also silenced some critics in midfield with a display of real experience. The man of the moment however was the veteran striker Fletcher once again.

Steven Fletcher makes surprise admission to Wrexham fans
Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel post match, Fletcher revealed to fans that he doesn’t remember scoring the winning goal and that he almost missed on the line.
Fletcher stated: ” actually can’t really remember the goal, I remember the cross coming in and Sam [Smith] headed and it was just after that it was a blur.”
The Scottish international then went on to describe the moment the ball hit the back of the net in order to earn his side yet another vital victory this season.
Fletcher explained: “I just remember it dropping to me and I tapped it in, I think I had a swing and a miss just seconds before as well which probably wasn’t great viewing.”
Fletcher has scored five winning goals this season for Wrexham
The strike against Huddersfield was Fletcher’s seventh goal in League One this season in his 28 appearances but five have been all important winning goals.
Fletcher has a better goal record than Jay Stansfield in terms of goals scored per 90 minutes this season and the Scot has earned Wrexham an additional 10 points with his decisive moments.
| Score and opponent | Time of Fletcher’s winning goal |
| Huddersfield 0-1 Wrexham | 73 minutes |
| Wrexham 1-0 Peterborough | 87 minutes |
| Wrexham 2-1 Wigan | 91 minutes |
| Wrexham 2-1 Blackpool | 88 minutes |
| Wrexham 3-2 Wycombe | 83 minutes |
Parkinson will know that Fletcher struggles to complete ninety minutes of intense League One football however, his usual 20 minutes burst at the end of the game allows the striker to use all of his experience to sniff out a chance.
It is not a coincidence that he has been so effective from the bench this season and you wouldn’t rule out one or two more big moments from the 37-year-old before the end of the season.
