‘I’d be lying’… Kop favourite Shaun Pearson predicts whether Wrexham will get promoted

Former Wrexham favourite Shaun Pearson has just predicted whether Phil Parkinson’s men will get promoted this season.

Shaun Pearson made 132 appearances for Wrexham during his four-season stint at the club from 2017-2021.

The 34-year-old centre-back cemented his name as a fan favourite among Reds supporters and retired from the professional game last year.

Now the assistant coach of Grimsby Town, Pearson has predicted whether his former side will get promoted ahead of the clash against Wrexham on Saturday.

Shaun Pearson predicts Wrexham to get promoted

Unlike the Mariners, who find themselves six points above the relegation zone in League Two, Phil Parkinson‘s men are battling at the top end of the division.

Despite drawing against Harrogate Town and losing to Tranmere Rovers at the STōK Cae Ras, the Reds are third in the table, level on points with MK Dons and five behind leaders Mansfield Town.

Pearson, who still holds Wrexham close to his heart after spending four years at the club, believes his former side have the quality in their ranks to win promotion to League One.

“I’d be lying if I said I don’t think Wrexham will be in the top-three at the end of the season,” Pearson told the Leader.

“If you look at them over the course of the season and the quality they’ve got, they have got enough players with match-winning moments in them.”

The former centre-back picked out two players from Parkinson’s squad as individuals he believes he can fire Wrexham to glory, non-surprisingly selecting Elliot Lee and Paul Mullin.

He added: “You always want to play well but when you get to this stage of the season, it is not so much your performance level; it is finding a way to win and with players like Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee in your team, you would always fancy yourselves to find enough moments where you win games, and that will hopefully be enough to get them over the line.

“We will be going all out for victory on Saturday but after that, there’s nothing more I’d love to see than Wrexham get promoted.”

Wrexham must show their quality against Grimsby

Wrexham will be without James McClean for their trip to Blundell Park as he serves the final game of his suspension, but Parkinson’s men still have the quality to brush Grimsby aside.

Although the hosts are unbeaten in their last six since losing 5-1 to Doncaster Rovers, these are the type of games that the Reds have to win to secure promotion.

The table doesn’t lie – Grimsby are fourth from bottom and fighting to stay in the Football League – while the visitors are hunting for their second consecutive promotion.

That doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy afternoon by all means, however, Wrexham must approach this game with true professionalism while displaying ruthlessness in the final third.

In their last two games, the Reds have recorded 41 attempts on goal without scoring and given the amount of quality they have in their starting XI, especially from the likes of Lee and Mullin, this statistic has to improve.

If they can rediscover their killer instinct, as demonstrated in a 3-1 win over Morecambe, Pearson’s prediction for Wrexham will come true.
