Kop redevelopment update as Wrexham Council ‘waiting for completion’

Wrexham Council appear confident that the green light for the redevelopment of the Kop will come soon enough.

Wrexham announced in September that the Kop would not be open for the start of the 2024-25 season.

Knocked down in January 2023, the Kop has gone and been replaced, for now, with a temporary stand.

Planning permission for a new stand had been granted just a couple of months earlier, with a rebuild time of around a year expected.

Delays mean the new stand is now set to come in 2025, marking a major moment both for Wrexham as a club and as a city.

Wrexham Kop update

Wrexham fans have been waiting for an update and the Wrexham Council have now duly obliged.

As reported by Wrexham.com, Wrexham Council chief executive Ian Bancroft has outlined that heads of terms for the redevelopment have been agreed.

Bancroft claims that the final legal agreement is still missing though and Wrexham must now sign off that part to receive the £17million of public funding put forward by Wrexham Council.

“The heads of terms were agreed a considerable amount of time ago. What hasn’t been completed is the final legal agreement. It is ready for final checks and signing, so we will wait for that to come back,” said Bancroft.

“It’s with the football club to sign that off and then that will trigger release of funding. We are in a position of waiting for completion of the final legal contract, not the heads of terms, which has already been agreed,” he added.

Council Leader Mark Pritchard even added that he would like to have given more money to Wrexham if it was possible, believing that the investment is important for North Wales.

“It is money well spent. I’ll repeat it, if we could have given them more I would have,” said Pritchard.

This is all pretty positive stuff and, hopefully, Wrexham will have that final legal aspect signed off in the near future.

That should then allow Wrexham to get cracking with the Kop development with a view to being completed next year.

The backing from the council is great to see and having that kind of relationship with the football club only adds to the feeling of unity in Wrexham right now.

Fans will hope for some memories in the temporary stand though, especially with Wrexham going for promotion in the final weeks of the League Two season.
