Michael Appleton would be ‘very surprised’ if Wrexham didn’t do one thing in League One

Former Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton has now explained what wouldn’t surprise him about Wrexham in League One.

Promotions and winning titles are a rare commodity for most football clubs, but on Saturday, Wrexham celebrated back-to-back promotions for the first time in their 159-year history.

A Paul Mullin double sent Phil Parkinson‘s men to a 6-0 thumping of League Two strugglers Forest Green. Their promotion to the third tier was sealed thanks to Barrow and MK Dons losing to Gillingham and Mansfield Town respectively.

As Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds plan to take the Wrexham squad on a trip to Las Vegas, planning is also underway for their first League One campaign since 2005.

The Reds have several players out of contract, including experienced heads Ben Tozer and Luke Young, while boasting multiple talented youngsters to build their squad around.

It’s an exciting time to be a Wrexham supporter having sealed consecutive promotions and Parkinson will be eyeing a third once August rolls around.

Michael Appleton issues Wrexham verdict that supporters will love

Having previously celebrated promotion with Oxford United and led Lincoln City into the League One play-offs, Michael Appleton has spent most of his career managing in the third tier.

Currently out of work following an unsuccessful spell at Charlton Athletic, the 48-year-old knows the league like the back of his hand.

Following Wrexham’s promotion to that level, Appleton has assessed Parkinson’s chances of leading them to glory for a third consecutive season, claiming he wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

“The financial power that themselves and the likes of Stockport have at this level, it doesn’t surprise me at all,” Appleton told the EFL All Access podcast.

“We see them as the first two promoted and again, Parky has done a fantastic job there and I’ll be very very surprised if they’re not eyeing another promotion. If that is reasonably possible or not, time will tell and Parky will have his own mind made up on whether that is possible or not.”

Wrexham can achieve history next season

Back-to-back promotions in English football are relatively common as Wrexham added their name to an exclusive list of teams.

Those are just a few sides who have jumped two divisions in two seasons but no team has ever managed three in a row in the football league.

That is history Wrexham will be looking to break next season, and although it’s a hugely difficult task, with the backing of McElhenney and Reynolds in the transfer window, who knows what they can go on to achieve.
