Wrexham are getting used to having the eyes of the footballing world firmly set upon them.

When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took control of the club in 2021, many were sceptical about the trajectory the club would take.

However, four years and three successive promotions later, Phil Parkinson and his team are preparing for their first home game in the Championship for 43 years.

It has been quite the journey for the Red Dragons, however, a current National League side has just claimed that they have achieved something ‘even more special’ than Wrexham.

Truro City claim their National League promotion is ‘more special’ than Wrexham

Speaking to BBC Sport, Truro City owner Eric Perez has claimed that his club’s rise through the football pyramid could be ‘even more special’ than that of Wrexham.

Truro won promotion to the National League last season and lost 2-0 to Wealdstone in the opening game of their season.

When asked about the rise of his club, Perez stated: “I think what we’re doing is even more special than what they’ve done.

“There are at the end of the day five league clubs from Wales, there’s only one club in Cornwall that’s even close to the Football League, and if we could get there, it would be something that would change Cornwall forever.

“It would weave a patch into the cultural tapestry of a place that has been alive and vibrant for 3,000 years. To be able to do something like that is, to me, what life is all about, so I actually feel like this is bigger than Wrexham could ever be.”

Truro host York City in their next encounter in what will be the first fifth-tier clash ever to be hosted in Cornwall.

Truro City have a few more promotions to go to match Wrexham

Whilst there is no denying what Truro have achieved is remarkable in recent seasons, they are still a long way behind Wrexham’s rise.

Not only have Wrexham climbed three divisions in four seasons, the football club has transformed the whole town and changed the footballing landscape with the documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham.’

Wrexham’s record commercial sales during their pre-season tour down under was just one indication of the growth of the club since Reynolds and McElhenney took over.

It is wonderful to see non-league clubs having the ability and ambition to go as far as they can in the footballing world, however, Truro have got a long journey yet to match the Red Dragons.
