Ollie Palmer saw his Wrexham career take a turn for the worse in 2024/25 and the striker has now opened up about losing his place.
Wrexham signed Ollie Palmer from AFC Wimbledon in January 2022 for a fee somewhere in the region of £300,000.
The striker was brought in to act as a new partner for Paul Mullin, who had just arrived on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.
Both players completely dominated in the National League and, after play-off heartbreak in 2021/22, fired Wrexham out of the fifth tier and to the league title in 2022/23.
The pair kept their starting berths across the club’s one campaign back in League Two, and while Mullin was injured ahead of the most recent season, Palmer was yet again a starting striker.
However, he lost his place in the second half of 2024/25, and his reaction has now been documented.

Ollie Palmer on losing Wrexham place
The 33-year-old made 27 League One appearances for Wrexham, scoring three goals and assisting two.
Palmer’s last appearance for the Welsh side in the league came on January 28 against Stevenage – a fixture they lost 3-2.
January signings Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith then started every fixture for the rest of the season, with Palmer not even making the matchday squads.
Now, in the new episode of Welcome to Wrexham, which came out on June 13 in the UK, Palmer’s phone call with his dad about being dropped has been shared, and it’s heartbreaking.
He said while on the phone: “The gaffer called me today. I was completely left out the squad. I know the industry I’m in, it’s ruthless, and I know that the club I’m at, it moves so fast, but I love it here. The hard bit is when you’re going from playing every week to all of a sudden you’re seventh.”
Palmer continued to explain how he felt about losing his place in a piece to camera, adding: “Stevenage at home was the last game I played this season.
“If I’m totally honest, it’s slightly more mentally challenging. I’ve never been left out of a squad before, obviously training with the lads throughout the week, knowing that you’re not going to be involved unless something unforeseen happens, such as an injury or suspension.”

How many goals has Ollie Palmer scored for Wrexham
Mullin was always the more prolific of the duo, but Palmer’s strikes and link-up play were still crucial to the club’s success.
2024/25 was his worst season in terms of goals, but it was also the campaign in which he made the fewest league appearances.
Ollie Palmer league goals for Wrexham:
- 2021/22 (half season) – 15
- 2022/23 – 16
- 2023/24 – 7
- 2024/25 – 3
In total, he has 42 goals and six assists for the club across all competitions.
He remains under contract until June 2026, but it remains to be seen what the future holds, with Mullin and Palmer both backed to leave Wrexham in the coming months.
