Popular Twitter account Footy Scran unearthed an abomination at the Wrexham vs Manchester United game in San Diego, with the decidedly grotesque ‘onionburger’ sending shockwaves through football and food Twitter simultaneously.
Wrexham‘s pre-season tour of the US is in the books with the Welsh club’s first fixture of the new League Two season set for this weekend. The Red Dragons went down a storm in the states this summer, no doubt enhancing their reputation and following overseas after the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
Wrexham’s recent victory over Manchester United was bittersweet
Wrexham recently took on Manchester United in what was the third game of the club’s pre-season tour. The game took place at the 35,000-capacity Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, which is the home of college American football team, the San Diego State Aztecs.
The Premier League side fielded a team of youngsters, and Wrexham’s experience showed as they ran out 3-1 winners to secure a famous victory. Goals from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden and Sam Dalby sealed victory for the North Wales club, although the game was overshadowed by a shocking injury to star striker Paul Mullin, who will miss the start of the season with a punctured lung.

‘Onionburger’ abomination causes huge stir on Twitter
Other than Mullin’s injury, the game will also be remembered (somewhat infamously) for the emergence of arguably the most controversial cheeseburger in the history of football ‘scran’.
‘Footy Scran’ is a well-known Twitter account that shares ‘scran’ – otherwise known as food – from football stadiums all over the world. The handle has built up an audience of 550k followers on the platform and has become a bit of a fan-favourite for match-going fans across the world.
However, their recent Wrexham-related post may be the most egregious yet, as they shared a supposed cheeseburger from Snapdragon Stadium which was sent in by a fan at the Wrexham vs Manchester United game.
The burger was allegedly $13.50 (£10.50), and featured perhaps the worst burger-onion ratio ever witnessed. Check out the abomination:
The post was seen over 2.6m times on Twitter and featured thousands of hilarious comments ripping into the mostrosity.
‘Whyyyyyy 2 kilos of Onions???? WHYYYYYYY’, one person said.
‘That’s a onion burger with a side of cheese’, another added.
‘That’s a burger only Shrek would like’, a third joked.
‘Bit stingey on onion to be scran’, a fourth commented.
The ‘onionburger’ is in stark contrast to some of the classics on offer at The Racecourse which will be continue to be served up this season.
Inside the ground, a range of food is on offer including: Cheese Burgers (£3.20), Rollover Hot Dogs (£3), Burgers (£3), Pies/Pasties (£2.80) and Large Sausage Rolls (£2.30) – quality, matchday staples ‘onionburgers’ simply can’t hold a candle to.
