Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer thrive together again as Wrexham get back on track

Wrexham secured all three points on Saturday afternoon, hammering Accrington Stanley 4-0 at the Racecourse.

We will probably say this so many times between now and the end of the season, but this felt like a big one.

Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Forest Green Rovers was a huge disappointment but Paul Mullin’s injury-time penalty at least ensured Wrexham didn’t lose.

Still, there were many Wrexham fans worried after that draw; the performances had been poor and Phil Parkinson faced questions over why the attack wasn’t firing on all cylinders.

A home game seemed like the ideal chance for Wrexham to get back on track after three away games in a row and this simply had to be a win.

Well, Wrexham delivered in style, racking up a 4-0 advantage by the time the half-time whistle was blown.

Mullin was the star of the show, hitting a first-half hat-trick with three fine finishes.

Mullin set up Elliot Lee for number four and Wrexham simply coasted home to victory in a virtually perfect day for Parkinson.

Anything short of a win on Saturday would have, understandable, seen the pressure ramp up a little.

Wrexham being in a promotion race is obviously impressive but recent displays have been a real mixed bag.

Few were really calling for Parkinson’s head but a win to get back on track was paramount for the Wrexham boss.

This wasn’t just a win but also a fine performance with Wrexham’s attack clicking into gear at the right time.

Mullin’s return to the scoresheet will be a major boost.

We are used to seeing Mullin in the goals but a recent eight-game drought was seriously concerning as the crunched end of the season approaches.

Wrexham need Mullin to be scoring goals and seeing him get back to his best on Saturday was a delight – and a relief.

Partnering Mullin up top was Ollie Palmer, rekindling their partnership from the promotion-winning campaign last season.

Mullin and Palmer were a nightmare for the Accrington defence and may have shown enough to convince Parkinson that they should be the first-choice pairing when available.

Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott offer quality options too but seeing Mullin and Palmer back at it again will have delighted supporters.

It all went right for Wrexham and Parkinson on Saturday, so let’s hope some real momentum can be gained from here and a special few months are on the horizon.
