Wrexham fans can expect a summer of change as Phil Parkinson prepares to lead the club into League One next season.

Parkinson has masterminded back-to-back promotions with Wrexham now preparing for life in League One.

It’s nearly 20 years since Wrexham last kicked a ball in League One and the club’s rapid rise leaves plenty of work to be done.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will need to look into the infrastructure of the club in terms of continuing to improve the STōK Cae Ras as well as sorting out a a training ground.

Fans will be excited for the transfer window too with Wrexham no doubt set to bring in new faces to help cope with League One life.

Wrexham have already started to make room for new faces with a host of players announced as being let go this summer.

Paul Mullin awaits Wrexham captaincy decision

Two key veterans in Wrexham’s rise have left the club with Ben Tozer and Luke Young moving on at the end of their contracts.

That is two experienced performers leaving the club and two leaders departing for pastures new.

This presents Phil Parkinson with a decision to make over the Wrexham captaincy.

Young is the current Wrexham captain with Tozer serving as the vice-captain and we saw the pair lift the National League trophy together last season.

Next up would be Paul Mullin, who is the third captain in the Wrexham squad.

The 29-year-old captained Wrexham in 10 games this past season, including six of the final eight games.

Tozer and Young found it difficult to nail down starting roles in the final stages of the season, so Mullin took the armband.

That leaves Mullin as the clear favourite to become Wrexham’s new captain with Parkinson clearly happy to hand him the armband in recent times.

Mullin would no doubt love to be named as the permanent Wrexham captain but he must still wait to find out whether Parkinson is promoting him into that role.

Who else could be in contention?

We would be stunned to see anybody but Mullin being named captain, but Parkinson does have other options.

Defender Eoghan O’Connell is one shout as the Irishman was named as Rochdale’s club captain back in 2020.

The 28-year-old has plenty of experience and is no stranger to wearing the armband, so he would be an option for the captaincy or being a reserve to Mullin.

There is plenty of experience in midfield too with George Evans, Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee all candidates too.

James McClean has previously captained the Republic of Ireland and was part of a leadership group at Wigan Athletic before joining Wrexham.

Will Boyle also has captaincy experience, ironically replacing Ben Tozer as Cheltenham Town skipper in 2021.

There are some real leadership figures in Parkinson’s squad and there may be more to come before the transfer window ends.

Mullin is the leading contender but even naming a new vice-captain could be a challenge for Parkinson after building such a battle-tested squad.
