Wrexham forward Paul Mullin battled back from a frustrating start to the season to end up as the club’s hero in promotion.

Mullin was Wrexham’s big hope heading into League Two.

The Liverpudlian had smashed 47 goals in all competitions to help Wrexham win promotion from the National League.

Mullin’s last League two campaign – which came with Cambridge United in the 2020-21 campaign – saw him rack up 32 league goals.

Excitement over Mullin was high but Wrexham were dealt an enormous blow in pre-season.

A clash with Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop left Mullin with a punctured lung, forcing him to miss the first six games of the season.

Mullin took a little while to get going, scoring just twice in his first seven games back from injury.

Come the end of the season though, Mullin had smashed 24 goals in 38 games to fire Wrexham into League One.

Wrexham’s Paul Mullin up for another award

Mullin’s exploits were recognised as he won the Wrexham Player of the Season award for the third season in a row.

Mullin wasn’t in the League Two Team of the Season though, nor was he up for the League Two Player of the Season award.

That left Blackburn Rovers baffled but Wrexham at least showed the appreciation for Mullin’s work.

Mullin is now up for another award though having been nominated for the PFA League Two Fans’ Player of the Year.

The striker is the only Wrexham name on the list whereas League Two champions Stockport County have two.

This is a chance for Mullin to add another award to his tally having bounced back from a horrible injury to continue his incredible goalscoring record in a Wrexham shirt.

There may well be more to come in League One from Mullin, but he will hope to return to the third tier with another award to his name.

Mullin taking on former Wrexham midfielder

Mullin is one of eight candidates for the award.

As mentioned earlier, Stockport have two players in the mix with goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe and striker Isaac Olaofe nominated.

Notts County also have two nominations as wide man Jodi Jones and goalscorer Macaulay Langstaff have been recognised.

Newport County’s Will Evans and Salford City’s Matt Smith are nominated too, as is a former Wrexham player in Davis Keillor-Dunn.

Keillor-Dunn spent a brief spell with Wrexham in 2020 before heading on to Oldham Athletic, Burton Albion and Mansfield Town.

The 26-year-old has been exceptional for Mansfield, hitting 22 goals and nine assists to help the Stags win promotion.

Keillor-Dunn will give Mullin real competition for the award, but with voting open for the next few days, you can be sure that Wrexham fans will be voting in droves for Mullin.
