Paul Mullin has now revealed what he expected to happen after joining Wrexham in 2021.

Wrexham‘s rapid progression from the National League to League One is largely down to one big transfer in the club’s history.

When Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds captured striker Paul Mullin – who had just fired Cambridge United to the third tier – not only was it a massive statement of intent, but signing the Liverpudlian would foreshadow their success for years to come.

Mullin has etched his name into Wrexham folklore with his incredible ability to find the back of the net – 105 times to be exact – since arriving at the STōK Cae Ras in the summer of 2021.

Having fired Phil Parkinson‘s men to the National League title last term with an eye-watering 38 goals, Mullin continued where he left off in League Two, netting 24 times in the fourth tier with one game left to play.

As the Reds host their final game against Stockport County on Saturday, many are reflecting on the journey that got them to this stage, including Mullin himself.

With two Hollywood superstars at the helm, success was never guaranteed as several had their reservations about the profiles of McElhenney and Reynolds.

Having never run a football club before, it was understandable that many were sceptical but Mullin – who dropped down two divisions to sign for Wrexham – wasn’t one of those people.

The Liverpool-born goal machine knew that as soon as he decided to sign for the Welsh club, it was the correct one, as he felt they were destined for success under their new ambitious owners.

“I didn’t expect everything that’s come with it but I did expect one thing and that was success and to climb the leagues,” Mullin told Sky Sports.

“That was my goal when I signed and being one of the first signings at the club that summer. That was obviously the aim, to get out of the National League which took two seasons and then to get out of League Two after that; it was always trying to get up the ladder. I imagined that would be the case, that’s why I signed.”

How far can Paul Mullin take Wrexham?

Lee Trundle has said previously that Mullin is good enough to play in the Championship, and while he’s yet to test the waters in that regard, the former Cambridge striker is immensely talented.

Given he’s approaching his 30th birthday, he does have a few good years at the peak of his powers before he starts to decline.

And while he struggled in League One last time, scoring three in 20 appearances for Tranmere, the Mullin today is a different beast to the one back then.

He’s a more refined and well-polished version of himself, who looks ready to take the third tier by storm and who knows, maybe fire Wrexham into the Championship.
