Wrexham are today mourning the passing of Joey Jones, after the former defender and club legend passed away at the age of 70.
When you think of Wrexham legends, Joey Jones is right at the top of the list.
Jones’ playing career spanned almost 20 years, and winning back-to-back European Cups with Liverpool in the 1970s was a major highlight.
Wrexham was Jones’ true home, though, spending three separate spells with the club across three decades.
Jones started out at Wrexham as a teenager in the 1970s before heading to Liverpool in 1975, only to return to Wrexham three years later.
Jones racked up the appearances for Wrexham before heading to Chelsea and Huddersfield Town, but he still had one more Wrexham spell in the locker.
1987 saw Jones return for another stint with Wrexham, ending his career with the club as he retired in 1992.
Almost 500 Wrexham appearances weren’t enough for Jones, as he continued his connection with the club through youth and reserve coaching, even taking over as caretaker manager in 2001.
Jones has been synonymous with Wrexham for the majority of his life, and his contribution to the club will never, ever be forgotten.
Wrexham have confirmed Jones’ passing at the age of 70, with fans everywhere paying tribute to the very definition of a club icon.
