Wrexham hero Ben Foster has claimed that his decision to come out of retirement to join the club has reignited his love for football, and that he prefers playing for the club now to his latter days in the Premier League.

The 40-year-old helped Wrexham gain promotion after he sensationally rejoined football last season, and signed an extension to stay with Phil Parkinson’s side for the coming season.

Foster was last seen in the Premier League with Watford, and he has now told The Leader that he prefers the excitement of playing for Wrexham, which is sure to delight fans of The Red Dragons.

“The reason I probably retired in the first case was I lost the buzz a little bit,” Foster stated.

“I remember playing in the Premier League for Watford, looking round and thinking ‘I am not getting the same feelings any more’, and that is a shame. But I got it straight back when I came here.

“It was only eight games, five of them were at home and the buzz I got playing here with the crowd, the atmosphere around the place in general, the team I was playing with, was just phenomenal.”

“That gives you an extra 10-15 per cent on a Saturday afternoon for sure.”

A safe pair of hands

Despite his age, Foster has already proven to be crucial for Wrexham, saving a last-minute penalty against Notts County in a crucial match for promotion last season, and his experience will come in useful in League Two.

Foster is one of the most experienced Premier League goalkeepers in history, with 390 appearances and two titles to his name, and it was something of a coup for Wrexham to land him in the first place.

It remains to be seen how long he will remain with the club beyond this season, but there is no doubt that convincing him to put the gloves back on was a good move for all involved.
