Wrexham are back in the third tier once again after hammering Forest Green Rovers 6-0 at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.
Wrexham went into Saturday’s clash knowing that promotion could be secured with a win and some help from Mansfield Town.
Phil Parkinson’s men weren’t hanging around and simply blew bottom club Forest Green Rovers away with a stunning first-half display.
Elliot Lee got the ball rolling to spark hopes of promotion being confirmed before Paul Mullin added number two.
By the time Ryan Inniss put the ball into his own net, Wrexham fans were already in party mode – especially with Mansfield beating MK Dons at the time.
Mullin made it 4-0 after the break and Wrexham coasted to a 6-0 win with Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott adding to the scoreline.
As news filtered through that Mansfield had wrapped up a 4-1 victory, Wrexham fans knew that promotion was secured.
An incredible pitch invasion followed as Wrexham now celebrate back-to-back promotions and a return to League One for the first time since 2005.
Phil Parkinson on Rob McElhenney conversation
Wrexham’s journey in the last few years has been quite astonishing.
Cast your minds back to the start of COVID-19 and few Wrexham fans would have even imagined starting the 2024-25 season in League One.
In came Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, completely changing the trajectory of the club and changing the energy around Wrexham as a whole.
McElhenney and Reynolds couldn’t be in attendance on Saturday but Parkinson has admitted speaking to the former.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Parkinson admitted that McElhenney called him straight after the game and they had a ‘great chat’.
Parkinson added that McElhenney and Reynolds would have loved to have been at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday but will surely be celebrating wildly over in the States.
“Well, Rob actually – I just popped into my office and he rang up,” said Parkinson. “I don’t think he was expecting me to answer, so I’ve had a great chat with him. Obviously, him and Ryan would loved to have been here today but they deserve a lot of credit, obviously, because the support they’ve given myself and all the staff and the backing they give the players as well, they deserve this and I’m sure they’ll be celebrating wherever they are in the US,” he added.
Bob McElhenney watches Wrexham win
Rob McElhenney may not have been able to make the journey to Wales but his family was at least represented on Saturday.
Footage posted on social media by Ash Randall showed Bob McElhenney – Rob’s father – celebrating inside the STōK Cae Ras.
McElhenney senior was seen filming Wrexham fans celebrating on the pitch, no doubt sending them straight on to his son as the celebrations began.
Wrexham have just one home game left this season – the final-day clash with Stockport County .
We would love to see Reynolds and McElhenney attend that game with Wrexham having one final party before heading into League One.
Wrexham fans will appreciate their busy schedules but having seen them celebrate on the pitch a year ago, a repeat would be great to see before the season ends.
